Overview
Every food business in India — from a small home-based kitchen to a large food manufacturing plant — requires a valid FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration to legally operate. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, is the apex regulatory body responsible for ensuring food safety and quality standards across the country.
Startup Dost provides end-to-end assistance for all types — Basic Registration, State License, and Central License.
What is FSSAI License?
FSSAI License is a mandatory registration that every Food Business Operator (FBO) must obtain. The FSSAI assigns a 14-digit registration number that must be displayed on all food product labels and at the place of business.
Types of FSSAI License
- Basic FSSAI Registration: For small businesses with annual turnover up to INR 12 lakh. Covers small retailers, hawkers, home-based food businesses, and temporary stalls.
- State FSSAI License: For businesses with turnover between INR 12 lakh and INR 20 crore. Covers restaurants, medium-scale manufacturers, storage units, and transporters.
- Central FSSAI License: For businesses with turnover above INR 20 crore, importers, exporters, businesses in 2+ states, and e-commerce food companies.
Why FSSAI License is Important
- Legal Compliance: Operating without FSSAI license attracts penalties up to INR 5 lakh and possible imprisonment under the FSS Act, 2006.
- Consumer Trust: The FSSAI logo and number builds consumer confidence in your food safety practices.
- Business Expansion: Required to list food products on Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, and Zomato.
- Quality Assurance: Ensures your products meet national safety and hygiene standards.
- Food Export: Valid FSSAI license is a prerequisite for APEDA registration and food exports.
- Bank & Loan Eligibility: Banks often require FSSAI license as proof of legitimate food business.
- Government Tenders: Mandatory for food supply contracts and institutional catering.
